Where we are at in Salt Lake City, Utah each year seasonal allergies are always a problem for many people. A natural solution for treating allergies is acupuncture and Chinese medicine.
Our Acupuncture and Chinese medicine clinic both in Salt Lake City and Ogden sees many patients with seasonal allergies. There are people who will take allergy over the counter medications or even prescription medications, and will suffer from different side affects such as drowsiness, foggy mind, and extreme fatigue. Many times the allergy medications will also just mask the signs and symptoms and will not cure the problem.
As Chinese medical practitioners, we look at the body as a whole and not only treat your immediate signs and symptoms, but also address the root of the problem. So when you are experiencing allergies such as runny nose, watery eyes, and sneezing, we can help you with those immediate symptoms, but also strengthen your body so you won’t have those allergy type symptoms again. You may ask how does acupuncture and Chinese herbs help with allergies?
Immunity in classical Chinese medicine has been discussed within the Chinese medical textbooks for over two thousand years. According to Chinese medical theory, allergies could be a disharmony between the spleen, kidney, and lung channels. Two thousand years ago there weren’t such terms such as bacteria or microorganisms. So in Chinese medical terms we have terms such as wind invasion. When the wind invades and if your body is not strong enough, then you may experience allergy type signs and symptoms. The most typical signs and symptoms include runny nose, watery eyes, headaches, and sneezing.
We will typically utilize acupuncture and Chinese herbs to clear the wind and improve your body’s “Qi” in order to promote and stimulate your body’s self healing mechanisms. When your body’s Qi is strong enough to fight the wind invasion then you won’t have allergies. Some of the herbal formulas that can help with seasonal allergies include Yu Ping Feng San and Bi Min Gan Wan. Many times these herbal formulas can be modified to fit your constitution and individual diagnosis. With acupuncture we typically will see what channels are affected and utilize acupuncture points that will balance and treat those channels that have the imbalances.
There have been modern research studies that have shown that acupuncture has been effective for the treatment of allergies. One such study was done in 2008 and published in the Annals of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology: an official publication of the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology. This study concluded that the treatment of allergic rhinitis in addition to acupuncture treatment leads to clinical significant results. There continues to be ongoing research with acupuncture and how it can improve the immune system.
If you are tired of taking allergy over the counter or prescription medications, acupuncture and Chinese herbs may be a great alternative option for you. You can contact us anytime to schedule an appointment to see how we can help you.
