Nearly 30 million Americans have high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia), according to the Center for Disease Control and prevention. A leading factor is a cardiovascular disease along with its complications: heart attack or stroke. With so many non-pharmaceutical ways to help control it. Unfortunately, doctors often prescribe medication first, which on many occasions isn’t helping to lower your cholesterol.
Example: a new study by H. Jin, et al., where 90 patients who had chronic high cholesterol, the average age of the patients was about 59; and who have had hyperlipidemia for an average of 8 years received 10 mg atorvastatin daily, with 45 of the patients also had acupuncture performed once a day for six days (making it one course of treatments), then they would skip one day followed by the same treatment course seven more times (for a total 8 treatment courses).
Before the patients began the first course of treatments, a baseline was established with each one. After all eight treatment courses, the patients that were taking atorvastatin and receiving acupuncture showed improved cholesterol levels, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein or “bad” cholesterol (LDL-C) and homocysteine levels were lower as well; and nitrogen monoxide vascular endothelial growth factor and high-density lipoprotein or “good” cholesterol (HDL-C) improved compared to the drug-only group. Overall, the total treatment effective rate was significantly higher in the acupuncture group vs. the drug-only group.
